The ERP Selection Guide for Growing Businesses

By The Nomad Softwares TeamJanuary 29, 20262 min read

An ERP system is one of the longer-term commitments a growing business makes — switching later is expensive and disruptive. That makes the selection process worth slowing down for, even when the pressure to "just pick something" is high.

Modular beats monolithic

The biggest mistake we see is businesses buying an all-in-one ERP suite sized for a company three times their current headcount, then paying for modules — HR, Supply Chain, advanced Finance — they won't touch for years. A modular ERP lets you deploy Inventory and Finance now, and add CRM or Supply Chain later without a second implementation project.

Ask any ERP vendor directly: "What does it cost, in time and money, to add a module two years from now?" The answer tells you a lot about how the platform is actually architected.

Questions worth asking before you sign

  • Does it integrate with what you already use? Your accounting software, your e-commerce platform, your CRM — an ERP that can't sync with your existing tools creates new manual work instead of removing it.
  • How is data structured across locations? If you operate multiple warehouses or branches, confirm inventory and financial data sync in real time, not on a nightly batch job.
  • What does onboarding actually look like? Ask for a realistic timeline from a comparable-sized customer, not the vendor's best-case estimate.
  • Who owns your data? Confirm you can export your full dataset cleanly if you ever need to migrate away.

Signs you're ready for ERP, not just better spreadsheets

If your team is manually reconciling inventory counts across locations, re-entering the same customer data into three different tools, or your finance close takes days because nothing is synced automatically — those are the classic signals that a modular ERP will pay for itself quickly.

Our approach

Nomad's ERP implementations start with a single module tied to your most immediate pain point, typically Inventory or Finance, deployed and stable before we add the next. It's a slower first quarter in exchange for a rollout your team actually adopts.
